Florence Lemay

We are fortunate to introduce you to Florence Lemay, a painter from Lévis, Quebec, with whom we recently had the chance to speak. Fascinated by human complexity, she explores intimacy through a style oscillating between abstraction and figuration. Dive into the captivating world of this artist who gives form to the human psyche.

How does your fascination with the human take shape in your paintings?

I have a deep passion for the human, for psychology, and for the interactions that shape our lives. Past wounds, especially when they surface in the present, particularly inspire me. It is with fervor that I paint my subjects, allowing their energies to express themselves through vivid colors, raw strokes, and the intensity of a gaze. My brushstrokes are a silent dialogue with my characters, a conversation that evolves as the canvas progresses. I never know where the work will lead me, until the moment it is complete.

Music, like painting, seems to be central to your life. What role does music play in your work? And what have you been listening to lately?

I come from a family of musicians and grew up with classical music. Music and art are jointly linked in my eyes. Each musical style has its own meaning and helps me to center my emotions when I paint a work. These days, I really like world music. Here are a few pieces that I've been resonating with lately!

Les Mamans du Congo & Rrobin – Ntima
HaBanot Nechama- So Far
José González - Line of Fire

In 2024, you were a finalist at Art Battle in Toronto and Chicago, and exhibited in London and Monaco. How have these experiences abroad influenced your perception of your art and your career?

I am so happy to have reached this stage. It was a dream for me, a true milestone in my life. These were all experiences that were offered to me on a silver platter, and I jumped into them. Today, I feel that it has propelled me elsewhere: my notoriety has grown, and now I just need to dare to ask to perhaps receive. Sky is the limit!

Tell us about your collection, Ode à la vulve (Ode to the Vulva).

I have always cared deeply about the female condition, the destigmatization, and the acceptance of sexuality. But it was while reading a book on the subject that I felt a visceral need to convey a message. To shout louder and open up the discussion on the topic. If you're interested, I explain my approach in more detail here.

Your favorite mediums?

Definitely acrylic because it dries fast!

You participate in live painting events. What do these events bring to you artistically?

Very good question, I love it! What I like about live paintings is letting myself be completely inspired by the world around me. I never plan the direction the work will take in advance: each time, I surprise myself by discovering the final result and making the connection with the event that inspired it. I love interacting with the public, feeling people's energy, and letting myself be carried by that connection. I also appreciate the pressure of having to finish the canvas within a limited time, which is why I've participated so often in Art Battle competitions—for the unique adrenaline it provides.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions where we can see your works?

Yes! I am currently exhibiting in Quebec City, at the Ni vu ni cornu gallery (Place Ste-Foy) as well as in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. My works are also presented at Le Graffiti restaurant on Avenue Cartier, at Théophie in Lévis, and at Tambour Café.

From September 30th to October 5th, I will hold a solo exhibition with Émilie Gosselin in Montreal, at Studio M. In March, my creations will also be presented at the Musée Beaulne, in Coaticook.
